Brindenford Notes Page 12

10/4

The PCs spent about a week in Brindenford, selling off gear and getting ready for a long trip to Vanhark. Eventually Valkrist blew the whistle she'd been given by the mayor, and summoned a HUGE whale, which bore up a tiny gondola beneath it. They boarded and inspected said Gondola, and decided it was adequate for their trip. Several things they really liked were the self-cleaning bathroom and kitchen/galley, and the gallery of plate-glass windows at the front of the vessel for the navigator.

Not long after launch, the rogue (Gunter) decided to inspect the upper level of the gondola, and discovered the top deck. It appears that some form of magic protects those who walk there from the worst effects of wind and perhaps weather as well. He then proceeded to climb a ladder to the whale itself, and then rungs that are mounted on the whale's side (on the leather straps that support the gondola) to the skywhale's back itself. Once there, he was amazed by the vastness; he also realized that the whole surface was at least somewhat protected from the winds, as below. However, he was almost immediately attacked by a cluster of stirges, who dive-bombed him. He was able to flee most of the way down the ladder, but had to jump the last 50' and took some falling damage. He then dived and tumbled down the stairs INTO the gondola, yelling for help. Elrohir popped out of his chamber, saw the problem, and promptly pitched a fireball! Gunter made an impressive dive out of the worst of the blast, but the stirges were all fried to a crisp. Amazingly, the interior surfaces of the Gondola remained unmarred by soot or charring.

Two days of plain sky-sailing passed after this; the PCs decided that stirges were a minor nuisance to the skywhale, but enough threat to them that they'd leave them alone. On the second day, about six hours after sunrise, as they sailed south over forested hills, they spotted something coming towards them. Observation (and a bit of moaning because they lacked a telescope or spyglass) led them to recognize a dragon, probably blue in color. Knowing that the less metallic a dragon is in coloring, the more likely evil it is to be, they determined that this beast was not at all pearlescent. The skywhale began to bank, and veer off. Within a few minutes, it became obvious the dragon was in pursuit, and the skywhale was making for a nearby bank of obscuring clouds.

Elrohir, worried that clouds would not be enough to protect from the dragon, used a valuable scroll of invisibility to render the skywhale (and all its gear!) invisible for six minutes!

This gave the skywhale plenty of time to get into hiding and away from the dragon. Soon, unable to pick up a scent, it decided to find better hunting elsewhere. However, the PCs were distracted from this by noting that the cloud-bank contained a large hole in one side. The skywhale tried to fly into the hole, but Val was suspicious, and directed it instead to circle around and above the clouds. They were startled and intrigued to discover that, on the top of the cloud, there rested a shining white stone castle! And on the battlements of said castle, peering out (but unable to see the invisible whale) was a giantess; she had blue-violet skin and black hair, and wore a white-fur-trimmed robe. She bore no visible weapons, and there were no other living creatures in sight, despite the castle's large size and many outbuildings. After judiciously observing, the PCs decided that they were better off NOT paying the castle a visit at this time; they marked the locations of the dragon and castle, with drift direction and rate of speed estimated, and went on their way...
