Bridgewater

Page history last edited by Gillian 2 years, 10 months ago

Bridgewater is a small village in the Barony of Greenlake. It is located on the western end of the barony, on the shore of Lake Iylyria. It has a population of about 110 adults (ages 12-70, roughly). The village is supported by logging in the extensive forests nearby, and by fishing on Lake Iylyria. Just recently, a boat service between Bridgewater and Laketower, the Baron's home town, has grown up.

Bridgewater is controlled by the local loggers. The logging consortium of Rolland & Ywain works the forests around this area, and are the main source of income. The two men are not often in Bridgewater, because they run a dozen camps between Bridgewater and Aberdovy, and Ywain spends a great deal of his time in Knedale, negotiating the sale of their product.

There are also a fair number of fishermen who live in Bridgewater, but they are not a major economic force. They support their families, but don't bring in much in the way of cash, so they cannot compete with the logging trade. The third source of income is furs from the woods - bear, fox, rabbit, deer and weasel are the most common. Bird feathers - particularly from a bright yellow or green parakeetlike bird known as the Anhieldfast Parakeet - are also highly prized in the Greenvale markets.

There are no actual shops in Bridgewater - most of the villagers have some craft or skill that they trade with neighbors, and there are three homes which brew beer, and rotate the "duties" of running a tavern. The only large building in the village is the logging headquarters, on the western side of town (building 1). Building 3 is the Sawmill. Buildings 8 thru 12 are fishermen's huts, and 9 is the residence of the fisherman who owns the boat now being pressed into service as a ferry. He and his sons are building a wooden dock, so the boat can load and unload without having to be pulled up on shore.

The hill on the west side of town, where the Logging HQ is located, is known as Tana's Hill. The stream is Rainy Creek.

Important People:

Rolland Hewer - half owner of the Logging Consortioum Rolland & Ywain; a large, busy man with a booming voice and a thick brown beard. He's almost never seen without an axe near at hand or hanging from his belt. He's about 45, unmarried. He's not a mean man, but profit is his driving interest in life, and he refers to everything by how much it costs, earns, or loses.

Evan and Collin Atwater - the ferryman and his oldest son. Intelligent, quick to see that there may be change coming to their village. They're not sure the logging trade is really helping their community, they want to bring in new business. They're very pleased to see the PCs arrive in the area, and will do their utmost to support them.

Corva Oakhallow - the Miller - she's a strong, young woman, recently widowed. She runs the sawmill, which she technically owns, but she's deep in debt to Rolland. She and her husband built the mill with borrowed money, and after he died -  drowned in the mill pond after a night drinking - she's been unable to repay her loan. She supports the logging consortium, but its hard to tell whether that's her natural choice, or if she does it out of pragmatism.
