Back to Laketower

Hinden is a small village of about 150 people, in Greenlake Barony. It is located on the western end of Lake Iylyria, on a peninsula about 2 miles across/long. A small but busy community of loggers, woodsmen and huntsmen, it has direct ties to Bridgewater, Aberdovy, and Knedale (in Greenvale), as well as other villages. Hinden is mostly human, with a few half-elves and hobytlan, and a family of catfolk who have recently settled in the village for no apparent reason.

Important Villagers:

Alderman Pavletic Kalin - the village's appointed official representative of Baron Dmitri. He is first cousin to Sasha Kalin, the owner of the Kalin Tavern. Pavletic is in his 40's but suffers from bad joints and a winter cough each year.

Norik Kalin - Alderman's son, he helps with the docks, does heavy lifting and any traveling outside Hinden that his father requires. He's a reliable and trustworthy deputy to his father.

Sasha Kalin - the tough, widowed tavern owner.

Places in the village:

The Docks: 3 wooden docks stretch out into the lake here, and this is the busiest spot in the village. Several logging crews send their cut lumber across the lake to Knedale once or twice a week, and every day fishermen go out onto the lake's waters. A moderate amount of trade between Knedale and Hindon occurs - about 3 times a week, a ferryboat carries passengers to Aberdovy and then across to Knedale and Wytchway. On any given day, morning and evening, 8-12 boats come in or leave the docks. Otherwise, relative quiet reigns. A couple old fishermen are present on the piers. The Alderman, who also maintains the tax-rolls, (or his son, Norik), supervises any and all cargos as they load and unload.

Kalin Tavern: a smallish place, with a common room and one private room, a large bar, an open fireplace with a small stage for performers, and three bunkrooms that can sleep up to 10 each.

Random Tavern Patrons:

roll  encounter info/what they know
2d6 loggers  Alderman Pavletic must issue a license to all loggers, who pay a tax to the Baron for the privilege.
1d4+1 foresters  Alderman Pavletic's men; they patrol the woods for illegal logging and poaching.
a huntsman  There are cave bears living under the hill nearby. This huntsman wants one as a trophy, but the alderman has forbidden hunting them.
fur trader  travels the lake, buying furs and shipping them to Knedale. He/she will pay good money for cave bear pelts (10 sp), claws (2 sp) or gall bladder (20 sp); this is illegal without Pavletic's permission.
5-6 2d6 fishermen/ boatmen  most are local, but a few come from other villages or even Knedale.  They're rowdy and ready for most anything; they and the farm hands below often get into brawls.
7 1d3 local merchants/crafters Slightly older and less rowdy than other locals, these villagers are interested in eating a meal, conducting business, and getting back to work; in the evenings, they leave early.
8-9 2d4 local farm hands  Toung folk out on the town. Ready to drink and play rough. They'll take no insult from the fishermen and boatmen.
10  Alderman Pavletic and/or his son  Pavletic and his son take their roles seriously, and spend a great deal of time when not actively working here, listening to local residents, craftsmen, merchants and visitors.

Mercantiler - this shop has no name beyond "Pudd's". It sells general merchandise that is not locally manufactured; rope, metal tools and less commonly-needed supplies. Rosely "Pudd" Puddlefoot is a typical hobbyt merchant - always friendly and happy to help, but he's actually quite clever at always getting a good deal. He's a childless widower.

Tailor's shop - abandoned, shut down. Octavius came from outside Greenvale (Miran) and was a dour widower with a single beloved daughter. He killed her and himself about 4 years ago, and the building has been vacant ever since.
