COINAGES OF MIRABORIA

There are a number of modern and ancient coinages in circulation today. The most common coins found in Greenvale are listed below.

Note that in Greenvale and Tallowsland, a person could eke out a living on a silver a day, if they found a cheap place to live and ate a very basic diet. Living on less means subsistence food and having a non-standard living arrangement (homeless, in the sewers, in a stable or ruin,  etc...).

An average wage for a laborer in Greenvale and Tallowsland is approximately a silver a day. However, it would only very rarely be paid in coin, but usually as a place to live, food, clothing,  etc... instead.

'Valer Coins:

100 coins weigh 1 lb. They are square and stackable.

100 Copper Centimes = 10 Silver Pennies = 1 Gold Crown

Other coins that commonly circulate are:

Ha'penny and Farthing (broken silver pennies worth 1/2 and 1/4 penny respectively)

Groat (silver coin worth 4 pence) 25 per lb

Starling (silver coin worth 10 pence (same as a crown!)) 10 per lb

Sovereign (gold coin worth 5 crowns) 20 per lb

Ducat (platinum coin worth 5 crowns)

Harothan Coins

Harothan coins are of similar value, but are round and pierced, often hung on a thong or in a dwarf's beard.

100 Copper Staters = 10 silver Drachma = 1 gold Mark

Ancient Miraborian coins:

Coins from the 2nd Empire were of many different sizes, shapes, weights and names. A few of them are listed below, with their description and current approximate value (in silver) listed.

Aureus: a gold coin, wedge-cut from a 5 aureus circle = 2 Crowns

Denarius: a silver coin that was generally round = 15 Pence

Sesterce: a bronze coin (not copper), round or square = 1/3 Centime

Obol: silver, hexagonal or octagonal, = 1 groat

Librus: gold, this round coin was often debased, so value is varied = 4 to 7 Crowns

Solidus: silver, round, also varied in quality = 6-10 pence

For carrying capacity and for weight allowance, assume all these coins weigh about 50 to the pound. To avoid losing substantial value, it is necessary to exchange these coins at a moneylender.

Other Coinages:

Mirani coins are also of similar size and weight, but are accepted at only .8 value because they are often debased.

Mistlander coins must be traded at a moneylender - it is illegal to use them in Greenvale. There is a 10% tax charged for their exchange. These coins are larger and heavier than Miraborian coins, weighing about 25 to the pound. They are usually round and stackable. Like 'Valer coins, they use a 'splittable' penny. They are called the copper pigeon, the silver penny and the gold Hawk.

In the Pirate Isles, the City of Freeport mints their own coinage, although they accept all other coinages at weight.

GP - Lords

SP - Skulls

Brass - Pennies

CP - Bits

Exchange rate is 1 gp = 10 sp = 100 bp or 120 cb.  These coins are roughly equal to Greenvaler coinage, but they, like Mistlander coinage, are not legal tender in Greenvale.

Note that in Harothar, Mistlander coinage is legal tender, and is accepted on a 1-4 basis (4 Harothan coins of same metal to 1 Mistland coin).

Narbada has different coinages in each of the three major kingdoms, as well as Elves and Dwarves having their own monetary systems. In Terenor the following holds:

100 copper bits = 10 silver deniers = 1 gold livre. Platinum and Electrum are very, very rare. No 2nd Empire coins are to be found, but coinage from the Dwarven Empire that came before the current human kingdoms are not uncommon.
