Lord Arcane and the BirdThe situation at presentThe PCs have reached 10th level. Eric wants to have nothing to do with kingdom politics. Glade thinks it is imperative to rescue the Bird from his troubling situation. Shadow thinks roast bird sounds tasty.
Last session the PCs discovered that Aigle is not at all what he seemed. He is under a magical enchantment. In truth, he is Price Jhoram, missing (and long presumed dead) brother of Prince Taran, heir to the throne of Greenvale. The problem is that when dispel magic converts Aigle into his human form, he reverts to some autistic-like condition in which he cannot speak and does not seem to recognize anyone around him. He is totally defenseless and helpless. When in Bird form however, he is intelligent but cannot speak of who he is, and gradually (the longer he spends in this form) forgets who and what he really is.
The PCs took Aigle to Marig, where they dispelled magic on him. Once they recognized him as the Prince, they tried to dispel his "mental condition" as well. Unfortunately, it didn't work. So they took him to Lady Deora, head of the House of Ivorr (Eric's guild). She was also unable to dispel the effect. They then took him to the High Temple of All Gods in Marig, where the High Priest's right-hand man, Father Marcus, tried to dispel the curse/whatever. He also failed. Lady Deora finally suggested finding a more powerful wizard. She had two "suggestions": go to Master Daerwyn of Elfort, the Count's Wizard of County Ellegon, who is known for his Enchantment powers (but is also reputed to be stand-offish and not always friendly) or try to find the legendary Ahram Silverbeard of Haluun Island - a distant place that would require weeks of travel to reach, and no guarantee he'd be there or be helpful. He does have a reputation as a good friend to Greenvale.
They chose Master Daerwyn. They took Aigle to Daerwyn, and Daerwyn eventually admitted that he already knew who/what Aigle was, and that he could not break the spells on the Bird Prince. He declared that turning the Prince over to his family was a bad idea. He says that Prince Taran is not a trustworthy or good person to have custody/know the whereabouts of his (older) twin brother while said brother is helpless. He implied that Aigle/Jhoram would have a short lifespan in such circumstances. The PCs didn't disagree, never having met Taran. So they simply left the bird in Daerwyn's hands. The party also talked to Daerwyn about Lord Arcane and his obsessive attacks on the Party. They expressed their specific desire to be left alone and that they had no grudge against this wizard if he'd just GO AWAY!
My problem is this: 1. Lord Arcane and Master Daerwyn are the same person. Daerwyn only attacked the PCs because he felt they were continually "in his face" wrecking his plans. As far as the PCs were concerned, it was mere co-incidence. Having talked with the PC's face to face at this time, Daerwyn tends to agree with them. So he's no longer a reasonable valid bad guy.
2. Master Daerwyn is the one who enchanted Aigle in the first place. He could break the spell at any time, but doesn't want to. He knows that Prince Taran is Lord Umade in disguise. He'd love to sic the party on the Prince, but is afraid to have any connection to them in the process, because he truly fears Lord Umade. He is keeping Prince Jhoram under wraps as a way to blackmail/bribe Prince Taran/Umade if the prince ever makes a move against him.
3. I have an idea that Prince Taran is becoming aware of his brother's condition and approximate location (without realizing that Master Daerwyn has any role in creating the situation) because Daerwyn's page boy Robert has sold information about the Prince to a spy of Prince Taran's. Daerwyn realizes this and decides that it is too dangerous for him to keep Aigle. He decides to send the bird back to the PCs with a request to get him out of Greenvale somewhere secret and hidden. His motivation is twofold; if the PCs hide the bird, his blackmail tool remains intact. If Umade/Taran goes after Aigle, Master Daerwyn is out of the blast radius. I'm thinking that before Aigle rejoins the PCs, they'll experience an incident with a very strange woman coming to them and offering them a large sum for information leading to the whereabouts of Aigle and then turning the bird over to her. She hints that she works for "a person of great political and material power" (ie Prince Taran). She's creepy, plainly not good. I think Icestar and she should have quite a negative confrontation. |
