GreenWardensGreenwardensThe Greenwardens are mainly rangers, who work outside the limits of Greenvale across 'Boria. In general they work on the northern and western borders of Greenvale within the Anhieldfast forest and the Hikar Hills, but this is not their exclusive province. It is their duty to notify their leader of unusual activity in the wilderness that might threaten Greenvale's safety. Currently the position of Master of the Wardens is occupied by Count Theodred of County Ellegon. The count is 75 years old, however, and quite past his duties. His eldest grandson, Timon is the actual leader of the Wardens. There are about 400 Wardens, but nearly 2/3 are out of Greenvale at any given time. Note that the Wardens, being the independent sorts they are, are more loyal to the kingdom and the land than to individual rulers or commanders.
Greenvale’s least known protective force is a group of men and women trained to protect the boundaries of the kingdom. They patrol outside the borders and guard against the dangers that lurk within the Anhieldfast Forest and the Hikar Hills. They are rangers, druids, rogues and warriors now bound into a loose military order. There are several Vigils into which the Wardens (sometimes called vigilants) may be sworn. Each vigil has a specific geographic range which they patrol. Vigils are not large, and may only have 10-30 members. Of these, perhaps 10-15% are rangers, druids, rogues or other trainees who have not yet become Wardens. Training to join the Wardens is difficult, and many fail who try. Failed Warden trainees sometimes go back to the ranks of the Greenvale Guard or to their ranger or druidic group, but often they feel they have failed themselves as well as their training; many become adventurers. {Vigilant; Relics and Rituals}
Recently, due to the sharp increase in banditry and coastal pirate raiding in the Baronies of Eldon and Pintar's Keep, a group of Wardens has moved from western Greenvale to the south-east coastal region. They are keeping their presence low-key, and stay as much to themselves as possible. They have set up bases outside Faesummer Bridge in the Barony of Pintar's Keep, and on the eastern coastal border of Eldon, in a region not far from several villages which have had extensive pirate troubles.
The Mountain CatsThe Vigil that has relocated to the Pintar's Keep region is called the Mountain Cats, for their previous location in the southern Hikar Hills. The Mountain Cats are 30 members strong, led by twin brother-and-sister Vigilants Thunor and Matilda. Matilda has taken the coastal station and leads her 14 Wardens from there, while Thunor, with his 14 Wardens, is heading the unit south of Faesummer Bridge.
Thunor: a brisk, competent, kind man who has little time to waste, and little patience for fools, but a great love for children and animals. He knows there are great dangers out in the world and cannot bear not to fight them. (L 10 - L4 Ftr, L1 Rog, L5 Warden) Thunor's lieutenant is an old Warden named Wynstan - he's suspicious, prying and sarcastic, but genuinely respects Thunor and knows his job very well. (L9 - L5 rog, L4 Warden) Thunor's men are divided into three further groups, one led by himself, one by Wynstan, and one by his next senior Warden, Osbeorn (L8-L5 ranger, L3 Warden). Osbeorn is an overly opinionated half-elf who dislikes dwarves and halflings for unknown reasons. His bias often makes him seem sullen and angry. At this time Osbeorn and his four men are acting as a teaser, going out and doing "banditry", trying to get taken in by a "real" bandit group. Thunor suspects but cannot prove that much of the banditry in the area is supported by some hidden group. Two of Thunor's four men have also been split off and are spending much of their time scouting the deep forest, attempting to see what has the orcs and bugbears of the region stirred up. So far, they have had no luck finding out what's going on, but they have been in the area for less than a month when the campaign begins.
Osbeorn's four men (and he) are spending most of their time patrolling the border region between Greenvale and Pintar's Keep, trying to find the source of the banditry and determine if it is truly originating inside Greenvale, from some power source there. Thunor and his remaining two men spend most of their time in camp, dealing with the reports the others send them (mostly via animal messenger).
Matilda runs her unit somewhat differently than Thunor. She has an assistant, Senior Warden Gaven (L8 - L5 ranger, L3 Warden), but otherwise runs all her people herself. She has fanned most of them out in stations along the coast, where they watch for pirates (and run small patrol routes). They spend a moderate amount of time in the villages themselves, working to train villagers to fend off pirate raids (mostly by hiding from and tricking the pirates, not fighting). Two of her people have gone to Mound to attempt to insert themselves into the known pirate community there; so far she's had little news from them, but they've only been there a matter of weeks. One of her people is in constant liason with her brother. |
