CAER ERYNROTHCaer Erynroth
Headquarters of the ruling Counts of Ellegon, Erynroth is built on the river Ellaforth. It serves as the primary defense of the town and as the Count's primary home. Most of the city government offices are located elsewhere - in Aeledel Palace, where the city's mayor and council have their headquarters. The city charter gives it a certain degree of autonomy from the Count, but not nearly so much as the Council and Guilds would prefer.
Castle Erynroth is five stories high, standing some 54' in the central tower. It boasts a large courtyard surrounded by a wall with many guard-towers. Within the Castle itself dwell the Count, his son and daughter in law, his grandson, and numerous other relatives. The castle also houses many county officials and the servants needed to run such an establishment. The family is wealthy, and the castle is finely appointed. However, the castle is limited in size; many of the functionaries find themselves housed in quarters in the town, not the castle proper.
The castle does specifically house the Count's armsmaster and ostler, his personal wizard and priest (of Kehret), and his immediate family. A chapel, granaries, barracks, river-docks and stables are also part of the Castle proper. The castle still retains its defensibility in at least some degree, but it has been many years since there was any real physical threat to the residents. In the Dragonwars, five years ago, the closest battles were still over a hundred miles to the north. The town and castle took in many refugees, but was never forced to act as a defense. Still, the granaries are kept full, the armories are at the ready, and even the hoardings for the walls are in good condition and ready for use.
The main floor of the castle contains the great hall, the chapel, the Count's private chambers, many offices and guard chambers. Above the great hall are workrooms, the chambers of the Countess (now used by Sir Trellig and Lady Rebecca). Above the Chapel is the set of rooms occupied by the Count's personal wizard, Master Daerwyn.
Caer Erynroth also boasts at least one level of underground chambers which are at least as ample as the Castle, and may extend well under the castle yard as well, if rumor be truth.
The castle citadel of Count Theodred and his son and daughter in-law, Sir Trellig and Lady Rebecca of Ellegon. It is also the sometime home of Sir Trellig's nephew Sir Timor, acting Master of the Wardens. Sir Timor is rarely here, though his wife Margret and young daughters Elfearawyn and Gwytha are found here. Half a dozen other siblings of Sir Trellig and of Sir Timor and cousins, uncles and extended family numbering in the dozens are also found in various positions around the castle and the town. Sir Timor is Sir Trellig's heir, as Trellig and Rebecca have no children of their own (Timor's father was Trellig's younger brother, who died in the Dragonwars 5 years ago).
Located on the river, the citadel posesses a five story (54’) keep which also has a subterranean level of approximately the same area. It is highly defensible and boasts not only martial defenses, but arcane ones as well. |
